Welcome to the U.S. Route 1 Improvements at Fort Belvoir Information Website
Within this website you will find Contractor-provided information on behalf of the Federal Highway Administration pertaining to the widening of U.S. Route 1 from Old Colchester Road on the South, across Fort Belvoir’s main post, to the George Washington Memorial Highway on the North. This website will be updated as needed to provide the public with the most up-to-date information available throughout the progression of this project. Please check back frequently, and do not hesitate to submit any questions or comments you may have.
This project fulfills a plan more than 20 years in the making to widen a 3.5 mile stretch of U.S. Route 1. It’s made possible in part from funding made available as a result of the opening of a new state-of-the-art hospital at Fort Belvoir under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure. Other growth at Fort Belvoir, Lorton and South County has lead to a significant traffic increase on what was already a busy road. It is the goal of this project to improve the quality of life for those who live and work along the Route 1 corridor, as well as to alleviate congestion for the surrounding area. The project is currently in the design phase, with construction starting in the Spring of 2014.
